6 Super Quick Self-Care Tips In Under A Minute

How often have you said those words when it came to self-care?  Oh, you know it’s good for you.  But really, who has hours to spare just to take care of themselves?  Especially when there’s:

  • Housework to do
  • Dinners to prepare
  • Work to get done

You know, the usual excuses we give when we’re busy.

A common myth about self-care is that it takes ages.  Who has the time to spend an afternoon at the spa, for goodness sake?

But there are many ways to practice self-care.  These 6 quick self-care tips will each take you less than a minute to perform.


1.  Take a Deep Breath


Anytime you’re feeling tense, stressed out, or even just a little ‘off’, taking several deep breaths will change the situation for the better.  The key?  Don’t just breathe.  Hold your breath in-between steps for maximum impact.  Start with inhaling to the count of four, then hold it for the count of four, and exhale to the count of four.

2.  Slow Down Your Lunch


When was the last time you truly enjoyed your food?  For most of us who are busy at work, lunch comprises a quick sandwich grabbed at our desk.  Or even worse, we eat junk food.  Pack of biscuits, anyone?

The next time you eat anything at all, pause in your chewing to savour the textures and flavours.  Not only does this help your digestion, but you’ll rediscover the joy of eating all at the same time!


3.  Stop Everything And Enjoy Silence


There is a lot to be said for a moment of silence.  Calm racing thoughts, lower your heart rate and relax fully into the moment by turning off your electronics and just sitting with your eyes closed.  Shut out the outside world for a moment.  Even doing this for just 30 seconds does wonders for your state of mind.  Go on, indulge yourself and allow a full minute!


4.  Look Around


Another excellent technique for calming yourself but still engaging the mind is to take notice of an object near you.  Then, spend a full minute exploring this object, taking note of everything about it.  

  • What does it feel like?  
  • How does the light strike the surface?  
  • What colour is it?  

Close your eyes and see if you can recall this object in minute detail.  This is also a brilliant exercise when you want to improve your focus.


5.  Daydream


Are you having a rough day?  Or perhaps you find yourself in a foul mood.  Take a one-minute holiday in your head to help perk things up.  Use this as a visualization exercise for an added benefit by picturing someplace you’d like to visit or something you want to experience in person someday.


6.  Show Gratitude


A thankful heart helps shift how you see the world and is really good for your mood and self-talk.  Think of something you’re grateful for.  Or better yet, take a minute to jot off a quick email thanking someone in your life for something you appreciate about them.

A fantastic double whammy – you feel good, and the person receiving the email will also feel good.  So spread the love, and everyone benefits.
